The Pomodoro Technique is a time‑management method devised by Italy's Francesco Cirillo as a university student in the late 1980s. He set a tomato‑shaped kitchen timer for 25 minutes to focus on studying, and named the method ‘Pomodoro’ — Italian for tomato.

The method is simple. You pick one task and focus only on it for 25 minutes, then rest for 5. This single unit is called a Pomodoro, and after completing four of them you take a 15–30 minute long break.

Why it works

A short, clear deadline creates a ‘let's just start’ mindset that reduces procrastination. The 25‑minute limit replaces the pressure to finish perfectly with a focus on this present moment. Regular breaks give your brain time to recover before it tires, so you stay productive even over long stretches.

What's more, the number of completed Pomodoros becomes an honest measure of how much you actually focused that day, turning a vague sense of ‘I worked hard’ into a concrete number.
