Deep Work is a concept proposed by computer scientist Cal Newport, meaning a state of undistracted immersion in cognitively demanding work. This kind of focus creates value that isn't easily replicated, yet it's growing rare in an environment overflowing with notifications and frequent switching.

The difference from shallow work

‘Shallow work’ like checking email, meetings, and busywork looks busy but doesn't create much value. Deep work, by contrast, produces results that are only possible when focus accumulates. The problem is that because deep work is effortful and uncomfortable, we unconsciously flee to shallow work.

Practicing with Pomodoro

Deep work can be trained like a muscle, and Pomodoro is a great tool for that training. Set a long session like the Deep Work 50/10 or Ultradian 90/20 preset and, for that time, immerse yourself in a single difficult task only. When the session ends, rest fully to prepare for the next round of immersion. Start with short sessions and gradually lengthen them, and the time you can stay immersed grows along with it.
